Super Typhoon Fung-wong Strikes the Philippines: Two Fatalities and Large-Scale Evacuations Reported

The Philippines was severely impacted by Super Typhoon Fung-wong, resulting in a minimum of two fatalities and displaced more than 1.4 million individuals.

Officials stated that the massive storm caused widespread sudden floods, coastal inundation, landslides, and destructive gale-force winds, prompting the evacuation of 1.4 million residents nationwide.

Extensive Destruction and Rescue Efforts

In the town of Pandan, one of the worst-hit regions, emergency crews documented floodwaters reaching the tops of houses and homes washed out by strong flows.

“Our personnel rescued fourteen people stranded on the roof surrounded by water in a low-lying neighbourhood,” an emergency official stated. One resident frantically contacted us, reporting his home’s roof was about to be ripped off due to the storm. We saved him along with four family members.”

As of Monday morning, officials announced at least two deaths: a drowning victim on the island and another who died after her home gave way on Samar island.

Typhoon Strength and Projected Path

The super typhoon weakened to a severe tropical storm early Monday while moving over the main island, where the capital is located.

According to meteorological authorities, its maximum winds dropped from 185 km/h to 165 km/h, though wind bursts peaked at over 170 mph.

The storm system is expected to continue weakening while heading in the direction of Taiwan.

Response and Recovery

The national disaster response service indicated it was still working to assess damage to infrastructure and homes.

Roughly thousands of shelters were activated to accommodate tens of thousands of households.

Previous Storms and Environmental Factors

The typhoon hit shortly following Typhoon Kalmaegi, that claimed hundreds of lives with another 135 missing prior to advancing to Vietnam, where it killed five.

Searches for the missing persons had to be suspended recently due to safety concerns for rescue workers.

The climate crisis is making cyclones stronger and frequent. This typhoon marks the 21st typhoon to hit the Philippines this year.

Researchers report that the frequency of super-typhoons hitting the Philippines has risen by more than 100% over the last two decades.

Global assessments indicate that intense storms cause an average of US$3.5 million in damage for the Philippines every year.

The nation’s leader issued a state of emergency last week due to the severe damage caused by Kalmaegi and the expected damage from the new storm.
