Roughly 50 vehicles have been marked with what appears to be human blood in the German town of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, police confirm law enforcement.

Vehicles, building surfaces and mailboxes were vandalized, in some cases with swastikas, they announced in a statement.

Officers state they were alerted late on Wednesday night, when a resident noticed that a automobile in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been covered with a reddish-hued liquid.

The fluid had been applied in the form of a swastika, they reported.

Police then found many other marked automobiles and building exteriors in the nearby vicinity.

Swastikas are banned in Germany under legislation outlawing the public exhibition of symbols from the Nazi era.

Police report preliminary tests suggest the liquid was probably human bodily fluid.

"There is still no lead as to where it came from; investigators are not yet informed of any physical harm in association with the incident," they added.

City officials announced they were working "to resolve the case" and have asked to the public for tips.

An important representative said the incident made him stunned and required to be resolved rapidly.

"This act strikes at the core of Hanau and reopens the trauma of the extremist attack half a decade ago," he stated on a platform, recalling the killing of nine individuals by a gunman focusing on individuals of immigrant origin in five years prior.
